July's always a very busy month, sewing together the post-school stress with the chill vibes of summer. (Shoutout to the quarter system for getting me out of school in mid-June, a few weeks after everyone else)

Anime Expo was that month, as were a bajillion zoo/safari park trips. My sisters had birthdays too, and Camp NaNoWriMo kept July in a continuous stream. Half the time I didn't even know what day it was, but that's summer for you.

But that's not what this post is about.

☆ July Favorites ☆

Media

  • I didn't actually watch any movies in theaters, save for Jurassic World, aka "I've never seen so many corporate labels in one film".
  • Feathers & Wax by Vicktor Taiwò was a very frequent listen for me during July; tagged as cuddlecore folktronica, I'm not exactly sure as to what the genre suggests, but to me it's the sort of song you listen to while you're on the freeway--it can be coupled with Jayden Smith's PCH as well as TRACE's Heavy Shoulders, the latter also a frequent listen thanks to Ingrid Nilsen's recommendation!
  • Did I even watch any TV? Not much other than Property Brothers & House Hunters. I loooooove HGTV and you can spend hours criticizing other people's life choices. Drew Scott is always A+++, though
  • For my sisters' birthdays we got Mario Kart 8, and not even a week later I had the Animal Crossing DLC, and let me tell you--Isabelle is *such* a joy when she's cutting corners and crossing the finish line before everyone else

Other People's Words

  • I've been a fan of Scott Westerfeld for a while, and thanks to July's post-school reading, I'm currently halfway through Afterworlds--it took me some time to get attached to the characters, but a few of them do have their charming points, not going to lie.
  • A gorgeous piece from Sarah over at notbecauseofvictories tells of a connection between a waitress and an angel. It's absolutely charming, reminiscent of a small town miracle that highlights the beauty of meeting strangers.
  • The New York Times piece on the New Horizons spacecraft--July 14th was a beautiful day. Pluto's new images being referred to as "the last picture show" touched me, not only because of our history of space exploration, but because of all the existential crisis that stems from the next question--{Where do we go from here?}
  • This quote from Satoru Iwata, who passed in July:
{That's the eerie quality of death; there's so much grief to be found,
but the people who leave us just want to celebrate the triumphs
and the joys they left behind in life. Have fun for Iwata, everyone.
Have fun with your family. It's what he would have wanted.}

Love, Dianne
