Tonight I had the opportunity to watch the Beireishit Dance Company at my university. It started at eight, and I recently got back home, and now I'm here to tell you about what it was like seeing such a fluid movement unravel on the stage.

A shoutout to ArtPower for bring gorgeous talent to us, and another shoutout to Jennifer for being the program coordinator that gave me access to the tickets via my Korean professor's connections. I went on a whim, and I'm glad I did--I won't have these opportunities once I graduate, and I'm sad that there's only a small amount of time left to enjoy everything.

Bereishit Dance Company is from Seoul, founded in 2013. Intertwining the contemporary world with the traditional landscape of music, Bereishit Dance Company focus on visual movement and the audio synchronicity to define their rhythm in the space of dance.

Bow-Control, one of the pieces they performed for us, is a new piece from last year, and it was absolutely phenomenal. There was this constant back and forth action, centered around the bow & arrow and the beings that shaped them, and as I watched I formed my own narrative in my head: one of conflict & double-edged resilience, navigating through great unknowns while under greater stress. Despite all the pressure of the unfolding story, the dancers still manage to be gentle in their footsteps, turning and twisting with a tenderness that no doubt requires finesse.

Balance and Imbalance is an older piece from them, played after intermission, and I enjoyed the atmosphere of the piece. Despite not knowing Korean, the body language of the performers gifted me with the info of body language--and it was beautiful, honestly, seeing the way movement became the language they spoke through. Rigid and fluid between drumming beats and the flow of light, each performer took the medium of visual expression to portray concepts larger than them--their stories, their conflicts, their history.

Although it was short, it was wonderful, and I'm honored to have had the privilege to attend. I'll miss ArtPower and the artists flooding my university. But for now, I'll enjoy it while I can.

Keep dancing.

Yours Sincerely,

Dianne
